How to Make the First Day of Childcare Easier for the Child and the Parent

added 15.01.2026

It’s completely normal to feel a flood of emotions on your child's first day, both for yourself and your young child. The experience of leaving your child with someone new, as they take their first steps away from home, is familiar to many families. We want to reassure you that these feelings are valid, and you are not alone.

Every child settles differently. Naturally, some dive right into the fun, while others need a little more time. While no amount of planning can eliminate all the emotions, there are helpful steps you can take to make the settling-in period easier for both you and your child.

At Go Kindy, you are partnering with a dedicated team of professional educators. Our staff are committed to providing high-quality, attentive, and caring support. We understand the importance of this milestone, and we are here to ensure a gentle and positive transition that supports your child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development from the very first minute.

Start introducing the concept of childcare early

One of the most effective ways to ease the first-day jitters is to introduce the idea of childcare early and positively. Focus the conversation on all the exciting, fun things they will do at Go Kindy, like painting, dancing, playing, and making wonderful new friends.

To help build familiarity, read books or watch shows about starting preschool or daycare together. Importantly, always offer the simple reassurance that Mum or Dad will always come back to pick them up.

If feasible, try to plan for a gradual transition: start your child a few days a week instead of a full week, or pick them up a little earlier in the first few days. Our professional advice is to start this process before you return to work, giving your child ample time to slowly and happily adapt to their new routine. Planning early gives you the flexibility to choose the days that work best for your family.

Practice a consistent goodbye routine

The goodbye process is often the most emotional part of the first day, but a simple, predictable routine is your best tool for a smooth drop-off. We encourage you to create a clear plan. Something simple like a special handshake, a hug, and a cheerful "See you soon!" can go a long way in creating a sense of comfort for your child.

Remember, children are highly attuned to your emotions. You want to project a calm, positive experience, even if you are feeling a little stressed yourself (it's completely normal to feel teary, but try to wait until you are out the door!). Avoid the temptation to linger or sneak out, as this can actually increase your child's anxiety. A loving farewell is always the best option.

When you arrive, take a moment to settle in: get down to your child’s level, play for a few minutes, and trust our experienced educators. When it's time to leave, offer that cheerful goodbye. Your child will quickly learn the reassuring fact that you always come back, and they are in the caring, professional hands of the Go Kindy team until then.

Pack an item/toy that will provide a sense of comfort

Familiarity provides a wonderful sense of ease during the transition to care. We highly recommend packing a favourite comfort item for your child to help them settle in.

Whether it’s a treasured dummy, a soft comforter blanket, a favourite teddy, or even a family photo, these familiar items offer instant reassurance throughout the day. If your child uses a sleeping bag, please bring that along as well. This simple act of replicating a small piece of home helps your child feel safe and secure in their new environment.

Visit the centre before its official start

One of the most proactive steps you can take is to arrange a tour of the childcare centre before your child’s official start date.

During a tour, your child gets to explore the space and meet our caring educators, which immediately builds familiarity and excitement. If possible, attending a short orientation session helps them see what a typical, fun day at Go Kindy looks like. Our staff are always happy to show you around, explain the enrolment process, and walk you through our orientation steps.

Please feel free to reach out to your nearest location to organise a private tour! We’re more than happy to help with this process.

Selecting childcare is a big emotional step, and wanting your child to be secure and loved is completely understandable. We hope these tips help make the transition easier, providing you with the necessary steps to prepare both yourself and your child.

At Go Kindy, our philosophy is that children learn best when they are loved, supported, and nurtured. For over twenty years, our management has been committed to providing a learning environment that focuses on maximising not only physical and cognitive but also social development. Our dedicated educators are professional, caring, and attentive, working to support your child's social, emotional, and cognitive development every day.

We look forward to partnering with you to make the first day, and every day after, a joyful success.
